A Barbican First debut

“Bold and uncompromising… a real achievement for a first book” – Elizabeth Fitzherbert for The Lady

“Wow! A true must-read” – David Mark, author of the D.S. Aector McAvoy series

“A striking debut… written with authority and persuasiveness” – Barry Forshaw

A stunning debut noir. A Trail of Blood on the Snow is a chilling exploration of masculinity, madness, and the harrowing legacy of abuse.

“He remembers me. He remembers the screaming and the blood on the snow. He remembers everything, I can tell.”

Rex is 41. Halfway to death and no happier for it. Any promise of a better life got stifled decades ago, when Rex was a limping school kid and Max was the school bully.

Then, a chance encounter. Max standing smug and handsome at a gas station with his oh-so-perfect family.

Rex secretly follows them home. Watches them. Thinks about his own miserable life. What Max did to him, and how a real man would claim revenge.

Rex acts.

Reviews

Bold and uncompromising, this debut noir has a gripping narrative and a strong, clearly defined voice that really gets under the skin of its protagonist. A real achievement for a first book. Reading more like a short story, the author does not mince her words and although some will find the subject matter upsetting it is also compelling and well written. Powerful storytelling enables us to get inside Rex's bleak mindset as the story unfolds in both past and present. This is not uplifting reading but one can't help wanting to turn over every page.

- Elizabeth Fitzherbert for The Lady

This is a striking debut that provocatively addresses a variety of issues while not forgetting the key imperative of the crime novel: to keep accumulating levels of tension. The central character, Rex, is in his 40s – and having a midlife crisis – when an encounter with the now grown-up schoolboy who made his life a misery leads him down a dark path. The possibilities of paying back the hurt begin to loom large. It’s a slim novella, but written with authority and persuasiveness.

- Barry Forshaw

I’ve read "A Trail of Blood on the Snow". In fact, I couldn’t stop reading it. It’s compulsive. I’m terrifically impressed.

- Maggie Hamand, author of Creative Writing for Dummies

Wow! An extraordinary work of fiction from a writer who truly understands the darkness at the centre of the human condition. A true must-read.

- David Mark, author of the D.S. Aector McAvoy series
